(Eagle News) — At least six people died after a fire hit a residential area in Manila on Thursday, Jan. 16. Authorities said the fatalities in the blaze that hit houses at the corner of Katamanan and Yuseco Streets in Tondo at 2:38 a.m. included a mother and her three children. The fire reached the third alarm and was put out at 7:14 a.m. Around 20 houses were reportedly destroyed.

A statement from the Supreme Court said Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta made the suspension “in the interest of everyone’s health and safety” as ashfall due to Taal reached several cities in Metro Manila. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has hoisted an alert level 4 over Taal, which means an eruption was imminent.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority suspended the scheme after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology upgraded the alert status of the volcano. The volcano is currently on alert level 4, which means a hazardous eruption is imminent. PHIVOLCS has recommended an evacuation from the volcano island and additional areas within a 14-kilometer radius of the volcano.
