4.8-magnitude earthquake strikes off Surigao del Sur early Friday

(Eagle News)–A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Surigao del Sur early Friday, March 1. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake hit at 1:24 a.m. Its epicenter was 90 kilometers southeast of Marihatag. The depth of focus was five kilometers. The following intensities were reported: Intensity II – Marihatag, Surigao del Sur Intensity I – City of Tandag, Surigao del Sur No damage to property nor aftershocks were reported.  

Hubert Dominic Guevara appointed SEC commissioner

(Eagle News)– Hubert Dominic Guevara has been appointed commissioner of the Securities and Exchange Commission. The Presidential Communications Office made the announcement in a Facebook post on Thursday night. Prior to his appointment, Guevara, a lawyer, served as senior deputy executive secretary. He is also former director of the SEC’s Compliance and Enforcement Department. The SEC is under the Department of Finance.

PHIVOLCS reports ‘elevated sulfur dioxide degassing’ at Taal

(Eagle News)– The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Thursday, Feb. 29, said there was an “elevated sulfur dioxide degassing” at Taal Volcano. In its advisory, PHIVOLCS said the 14558 tons measured on the day was the second highest flux recorded this year. Taal, which remains on alert level 1, also averaged approximately 9450 tons per day for the month of February and has been continuously degassing “voluminous concentrations” since 2001, it said. Rogelio Quevedo appointed as PCGG commissioner

(Eagle News)– Rogelio Quevedo has been appointed commissioner of the Presidential Commission on Good Government. The Presidential Communications Office made the announcement in a social media post on Thursday, Feb. 29. Quevedo was part of the Office of the Government Corporate Counsel, which acts as the principal law office of government-owned corporation, their subsidiaries and other corporate offsprings. The PCGG is under the Department of Justice.

Interpol issues red notice vs Arnie Teves

(Eagle News)– The Interpol has issued a red notice against expelled Congressman Arnolfo Teves Jr. following the issuance of a warrant of arrest against him in the Philippines. According to the Department of Justice, the arrest warrant stems from “multiple serious charges,” which include those for murder, frustrated murder, and attempted murder. DOTr: P18 million in fines imposed during intensified anti-colorum ops from Feb. 1 to 22

(Eagle News)–The Department of Transportation has imposed fines amounting to P18 million during its intensified anti-colorum operations from Feb. 1 to 22. The Department of Transportation said this translates to 50 unauthorized vehicles composed of vans, buses and other public utility vehicles being apprehended.
