(Eagle News) — President Rodrigo Duterte has promoted Court of Appeals Justice Samuel Gaerlan to the Supreme Court. Gaerlan filled in the post vacated by Diosdado Peralta, who is now Chief Justice. He bested the other shortlisted applicants for the SC post: Court Administrator Midas Marquez and CA justices Manuel Barrios, Ramon Garcia, Jhosep Lopez and Eduardo Peralta.

3.9-magnitude quake hits Davao Occidental

(Eagle News)–A 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck Davao Occidental on Wednesday, Jan. 8. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake, which hit  at 12:11 p.m., had its epicenter 41 kilometers southeast of Sarangani. Depth of focus was 24 kilometers. An instrumental Intensity I was recorded in General Santos City; Malungon, Sarangani. No damage to property nor aftershocks were recorded.

Tehran, Iran (AFP)–Iranian Revolutionary Guards on Wednesday responded to the assassination of commander Qassem Soleimani with a missile attack on an Iraqi airbase used by the US military, Iranian state media said. The IRGC confirmed the Ain al-Assad base was hit “with tens of missiles” and promised “more crushing responses” in case of further US attacks, the state-run PressTV said on Twitter.
