(Eagle News) — Over 200 more police personnel have tested positive for COVID-19.

According to Philippine National Police data, the additional 208 cases pushed the PNP COVID-19 total to 16430.

Of the total cases, 2544 were active.

Over 200, or 278, additional recoveries pushed the PNP COVID-19 recovery total to 13846.

No additional deaths were reported, which means the PNP COVID-19 death toll remains at 40.

Earlier, the PNP said among those who tested positive for COVID-19 was PNP Chief Debold Sinas.

Sinas designated Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar as the PNP officer-in-charge while he is recovering.

The Philippines is so far battling a surge in COVID-19 cases in recent weeks, prompting the Palace to re-impose an enhanced community quarantine over the Greater Manila Area for a week.

The Palace, however, extended the ECQ, which was supposed to end on April 4, to at least another week in a bid to curb the surge, which it had attributed  to the presence of virus variants in the country.
