PHL reports 539 new COVID-19 cases, bringing total to 15,588

(Eagle News) — The number of coronavirus disease 2019 cases in the country has climbed to 15,588, after the Department of Health reported 539 new cases on Thursday, May 28.

According to the DOH, of the new cases, 61 percent or 330 came from Metro Manila, 10 percent or 55 cases from Region 7, 19 percent or 99 cases for other areas, and 10 percent or 55 cases are repatriates.

The DOH said of the 15,588, 11,069 are active cases.

Ninety-two new recoveries were recorded, bringing the total to 3598.

Seventeen new deaths were also reported, for a total of 921.

The DOH had said it was eyeing a zero backlog in the processing of COVID-19 tests by tonight.

President Rodrigo Duterte is set to announce possibly new quarantine measures tonight.

The Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases has recommended that Metro Manila and Davao City be classified as a general community quarantine area starting June 1, Dr. Tony Leachon, COVID-19 national action plan adviser said in a radio interview.

He said the IATF recommended Cebu City be placed under a modified ECQ.
