With garbage out of Subic, Locsin orders recalled envoys to return to Canada

(Eagle News)–Foreign Affairs Secretary Teddy Locsin Jr. has ordered the envoys in Canada who were recalled over  Canada trash in the Philippines to return to the North American country.

“To our recalled posts, get your flights back. Thanks and sorry for the trouble you went through to drive home a point,” Locsin said in a Tweet on Friday, May 31.

Locsin earlier ordered the recall after Canada missed the May 15 deadline to get back its trash that was shipped illegally to the Philippines six years ago.

Following Locsin’s move, President Rodrigo Duterte ordered government agencies to look for a private vessel that would transport the tons of trash to Canada.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo then said the plan was for the Philippines to shoulder the reshipment.

If Canada refused to accept the trash, it would be left in Canadian waters, Panelo had said.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra, who was designated as caretaker of the government while Duterte is on a working visit in Japan, said the shipment cost, estimated at P10 million, was shouldered by the Canadian government.
