VP Robredo readies to be ‘voice of opposition’ to make the President listen

MANILA, Philippines (Eagle News) — Vice President Leni Robredo, who has openly criticized President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs and the reimposition of the death penalty, announced that she is determined to lead a campaign to ‘make the president to listen.’

“I think it is very important that I will be very vocal in the issues that I feel so passionate about and talk to more people who feel the same,” she said.

Robredo warned that Duterte’s war on drugs was having a “chilling effect” on the public and his open backing for police officers allegedly involved in the drug trade made the situation “scary”.

“Where do these poor victims go to? We are giving them a very limited area where they can air their complaints. There is a feeling of helplessness and there is a growing sense of belief that the government is behind all these,” she said.

However, Robredo also clarified that she is not against the war on drugs, but only worried about the people killed in the anti-drug operations.

“There are so many of us against the policies of the President. I hope I will be able to portray the role of unifying all the discordant voices,” the Vice President said.

“It is not as if we are against the war on drugs. We do agree with the President that it has reached a level that the government must really do something about it, but doing it this way will only make the problem more complex,” she added.
