UPDATED: Two killed, one hurt after portion of budget hotel in Manila collapses

(Eagle News)–At least two people were killed and one was hurt after a portion of a budget hotel in Manila collapsed on Monday, Sept. 23.

The bodies of construction workers Melo Ison and Jerome Fabello were recovered separately hours after a part of the Sogo hotel on Mabini St., Malate collapsed around 9:30 a.m.

Edson Ison, for his part, managed to jump as the building was collapsing.

He was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, who rushed to the scene, has ordered the City Engineering Office to reassess the stability of the remaining portion of the building that remains standing.

The building was being demolished for around a month already based on a demolition permit posted by its entrance.

“Stop muna demolition. Iassess muna ang stability..Stop for their own safety,” Moreno said.

Moreno has also ordered another part of the hotel on Mother Ignacia St. closed.

Some establishments near the site were also closed.

Mabini Street was also closed to motorists.

A probe as to who should be held liable for the incident is ongoing. Moira Encina
