UN condemns Davao terror blast, expresses support for Phl gov’t

(Eagle News) —  The United Nations on Sunday (September 4) condemned the attack carried out by still unidentfied suspects in Davao City, the hometown of Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte, urging that the perpetrators of this dastardly act be brought to justice.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon issued the statement on Sunday stressing “the need to ensure accountability and to bring to justice the perpetrators of these terrorist attacks.”

He also expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and expressed support for the Philippine government.

“The Secretary-General extends his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured. He stands with the Government and people of the Philippines,” UN’s Ban Ki-moon said in a statement.

At the same time, the 15-nation UN Security Council also issued a statement condemning the attack, describing it as “heinous” and “cowardly.”

“The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the heinous and cowardly terrorist attack at a night market in the city of Davao in the Philippines on 2 September, the UN security council said in a press statement.

They also expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the government of the Philippines.  Their statement also wished a speedy and full recovery to those who were wounded in the terror blast.

“The members of the Security Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security,” the statement said.

“The members of the Security Council underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of these reprehensible acts of terrorism to justice,” it added.

“The members of the Security Council reiterated that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed,” the statement said.

The Security Council also reaffirmed the need for every nation to fight by all means threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts.
