Two dead in NBP diarrhea outbreak

(Eagle News)– Two inmates of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) have died from a diarrhea outbreak in the penitentiary, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said in an advisory Thursday (June 1).

The victims were identified as Virgilio Sabado, 62, and Sabas Lastimoso, 67.

“There are now 1,212 diarrhea cases in Bilibid. Two deaths as of today,” the advisory said.

According to a report from the Department of Health (DOH), Sabado and Lastimoso died due to dehydration and hypovolemic shock, a condition involving severe blood and fluid loss that results in multiple organ failure.

The victims had been also suffering from type 2 diabetes before they were inflicted with diarrhea.

The DOH has provided 1,008 intravenous fluids and 50,000 water purification tablets to the national penitentiary.

Four thousand pieces of bananas and 2,000 bottles of energy drink were also given by the Department of Justice (DOJ) to mitigate the condition of the other affected inmates.
