PUEBLA, Mexico (CCTV) — Tropical storm, Earl has left thousands of families affected by flooding and at least 46 dead as of Sunday in Mexico.
Victims include 33 in the state of Puebla and 13 in Veracruz.
The country’s civil protection authorities have said that rescue and relief work is still underway.
According to the Puebla authorities, the most affected region in the state is Sierra Norte in the municipality of Huauchinango. The rainfall in the heavily wooded area has reached 265.5 millimeters over the past 24 hours, equivalent to that throughout one month.
Heavy rains have already triggered 22 landslides in mountainous regions, and have been the main cause of death in the area.
In Veracruz along Mexico’s east coast, the official data shows that the storm has damaged 6,300 homes and made an estimated 32,500 people homeless.
Currently 29 municipalities have declared a state of emergency.
Earl was formed in the Atlantic Ocean and later moved on to the southeast of Mexico after first hitting the neighboring country of Belize as a category one hurricane on August 4.
