Three candidates for Coast Guard chief named as Admiral Garcia retires

(Eagle News) — The Philippine Coast Guard on Monday, June 1, revealed the names of possible successors to Coast Guard chief Admiral Joel Garcia, who retired from his post.

In a statement, the PCG said it has recommended three senior flag officers, Vice Admiral Leopoldo V. Laroya, Vice Admiral George V. Ursabia Jr, and Rear Admiral Jose William U. Isaga, to Transportation Secretary Art Tugade for the post of 29th PCH commandant.

The PCG said Tugade shall make his recommendation  to President Rodrigo Duterte.

According to the PCG, Laroya is the current deputy commandant of the PCG and a member of the Philippine Military Academy  class of 1988.

Ursabia, on the other hand, is the current commander of the PCG – Marine Environmental Protection Command and the Task Group Laban COVID-19 water cluster.

He is a member of the PMA Class of 1987.

Isaga is the acting chief of Coast Guard staff and the current commander of the PCG District Southwestern Mindanao in Zamboanga City.

He is a member of the PMA Class of 1989.

“Admiral Garcia hopes that the next PCG Commandant will continue the pending projects of the Command, including the construction of the first PCG Hospital, K9 Training Center and Hospital, Unified Command Center, and Integrated Coastal Central Command and Control Systems, among others,” the PCG said.
