Philippine lawmaker pushes US state visit for President Duterte

A lawmaker from the Philippines is urging President Duterte to consider visiting the United States after his trip to Japan.

Akbayan Rep. Harry Roque said that the next stop of the President should be the US.  His reason:  to ensure that the US would not take steps to remove the President from office.

“I did relay to secretary Yasay, that after this trip to Japan, I think we should start preparations for an official state visit to the United States, and my reason to Secretary Yasay was very pragmatic.  unless we pay a state visit to the United States, eh baka mamaya the United States will take steps to remove President Duterte as chief executive,” Roque said.

He reminded the public of what happened to former President Estrada when he did not heed the advice of the US.  He also said that it was a known fact that the US had also done measures to remove from office other leaders of countries who do not follow them.

A state visit to the US would ensure that the diplomatic ties between the two countries would remain healthy, even if the Philippines would start to seriously employ an independent foreign policy.   (Eagle News Service)
