Sison believes Duterte offer of peace negotiations not sincere

(Eagle News) — Communist Party of the Philippines founder Jose Maria Sison has said he does not believe President Rodrigo Duterte was sincere in resuming peace talks.

In a statement, Sison said “it is highly probable that Duterte’s offer of peace negotiations, preconditioned by resuming them in the Philippines, is a prelude to the escalation of attacks against the people and the revolutionary forces.”

“The NPA (New People’s Army) can see through the ruse and will not lay itself open to attacks by declaring a ceasefire that is not reciprocated by the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) and PNP (Philippine National Police),” Sison said.

Earlier, President Duterte revived the possibility of peace talks, after he sent Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III to fly to the Netherlands and discuss with Sison.

Duterte has already urged Sison to come back to the Philippines to talk, and promised him “safe passage,” but the CPP founder has refused.
