Signal No. 1 still hoisted over Batanes as “Sarah” further intensifies

(Eagle News)–Signal No. 1 remains hoisted over Batanes as Severe Tropical Storm “Sarah” further intensified.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said as of 4 p.m., “Sarah” was situated  255 kilometers east of Basco, packing  maximum sustained winds of 110 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 135 kph.

“Sarah” is moving northwest at 10 kph.

The remnant Low Pressure Area of Tropical Depression “Ramon,” on the other hand, was estimated 400 km west southwest of Subic, Zambales.

PAGASA said gusty conditions will prevail over the northern and western sections of Northern Luzon, especially in the coastal and mountainous areas due to the surge of the northeast monsoon.

Tonight, light to moderate rains are expected over Isabela, Cagayan (especially on the eastern section), and northern Aurora due to the trough of “Sarah.”

Sea travel is risky, especially for small sea craft, over the seaboards of areas under a storm signal, seaboards of Northern Luzon and the western seaboard of Central and Southern Luzon due to prevailing or forecast rough sea conditions caused by “Sarah” and the northeast monsoon, PAGASA said.

The weather bureau said “Sarah” is forecast to gradually weaken tomorrow or on Saturday.

It is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Saturday morning.
