SC Senior Associate Justice Carpio declines nomination for Chief Justice

(Eagle News)–Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio has declined his automatic nomination for Chief Justice.

Carpio made the confirmation in a text message on Tuesday, Aug. 20.

“Yes, I am declining because there are only 8 days left from the vacancy to my compulsory retirement,” he said.

Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin is slated to retire on Oct. 18, while Carpio will retire on Oct. 26.

The five most senior justices of the SC are automatically nominated for the Chief Justice post, but they have to accept the nomination or reject it for their application to be considered by the Judicial and Bar Council.

Apart from Carpio, automatically nominated to the post are  Justices Marvic Leonen, Estela Perlas-Bernabe, Benjamin Caguioa and Diosdado Peralta.

Leonen has, however, already declined the nomination. Moira Encina
