Senate panel issues subpoena vs Faeldon for GCTA hearing

The Senate panel on justice and human rights’ subpoena for Bureau of Corrections chief Nicanor Faeldon.

(Eagle News)–The Senate panel on justice and human rights has issued a subpoena against Bureau of Corrections chief Nicanor Faeldon for him to appear in the panel hearing on the Good Conduct Time Allowance law, or Republic Act 10592, on Monday, Sept. 2.

Senator Richard Gordon, panel chair, signed the subpoena for Faeldon to testify on Saturday night.

The subpoena was also signed by Senate President Tito Sotto.

The hearing was set following outrage over the reported possible release of former Calauan, Laguna Mayor Antonio Sanchez under RA 10592, which increases the GCTA given to inmates.

Sanchez was convicted of the murder and rape of Aileen Sarmenta and her friend Allan Gomez in the 1990s.

Sanchez’s family had said a release order dated Aug. 20 had already been signed in  his favor, but Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said based on information from Faeldon, he did not sign any order to that effect.

But a GMA 7 report said it had secured an Aug. 20 document for the release of one Antonio Leyva Sanchez that was signed by Faeldon.

The document said Sanchez was “found to have served 40 years upon retroactive application of RA No. 10592 and was certified to have no other legal cause to be further detained, shall be released from confinement.”

Faeldon has yet to issue a statement on GMA’s report.

The hearing is scheduled at 10 a.m.With a report from Meanne Corvera
