Senate OKs postponing SK, Barangay polls on final reading

(Eagle News)– The Senate on Tuesday (September 13) approved on its third and final reading the measure postponing the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan pollls initially due next month and rescheduling it to October 23, 2017.

With a vote of 20-2, Senate Bill 1112 was unanimously approved.

The two senators who voted negative to the proposal were Senators Ralph Recto and Antonio Trillanes IV.

The approved bill states that due to rescheduling, the term of incumbent barangay officials will be extended for a year, except they are removed or suspended from their post. The bill also states that after October 2017, the elections will be held every three years.

President Rodrigo Duterte is a known advocate of the postponement, saying that drug money would be used in the elections.
