Senate approves measure postponing May 2020 barangay polls

(Eagle News)–The Senate has approved on final reading a measure that would postpone the May 2020 barangay elections.

Twenty-one senators voted to approve the measure, which seeks to move the barangay polls to December 2022 instead.

If passed into law then, there will be two elections in 2022–one the May 2022 presidential polls, and the other the barangay elections.

Senator Imee Marcos, chair of the committee on electoral reforms, more than six months is enough time for the Commission on Elections to prepare for the December 2022 elections.

Under the measure, the Sangguniang Kabataan and barangay polls will also be regularly held every third year.

Since 1988, the barangay elections have been postponed for six times. Meanne Corvera
