SC rules Calida petition to stop 17th Congress probe into gov’t contracts won by family’s security agency now moot

(Eagle News)–The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition by Solicitor General Jose Calida to stop a Senate inquiry into the government deals acquired by his family’s security agency, citing mootness.

In its resolution promulgated on Friday, Oct. 25, Calida said the terms of the 17th Congress and Antonio Trillanes IV as senator, who had wanted the probe, had already ended.

Calida had argued the Committee on Civil Service, Government, Reorganization and Professional Regulation led by then-senator Trillanes had no jurisdiction to conduct the probe into the contracts bagged by  Vigilant Investigative and Security Agency Inc. (VISAI) since Calida assumed office in 2016.

Trillanes had alleged the “multimillion” pesos worth of contracts were anomalous.

Calida had said the contracts were aboveboard.

The Palace also defended Calida, saying there was nothing wrong about owning shares in the agency.
