SC lifts TRO on conduct of Mamasapano trial

(Eagle News)–The Supreme Court has lifted the temporary restraining order it had issued on the conduct of the Mamasapano trial at the Sandiganbayan.

This means that the trial stemming over charges filed against former President Benigno Aquino III and several others for the deaths of 44 members of the Special Action Force due to the botched operation in 2015 can now proceed.

The TRO was issued by the SC in February last year, after  family members of the killed SAF commandoes urged the reinstatement of a heavier case of reckless imprudence and homicide charges against Aquino, who at  that time,  was already scheduled to be arraigned only for graft and usurpation of authority.

Ombudsman Samuel Martires has already moved to withdraw the information against Aquino, a motion the Sandiganbayan has yet to act on.

Apart from Aquino, former SAF chief Getulio Napeñas and former Philippine National Police Chief Alan Purisima are facing charges for the botched operation. Moira Encina
