SC Associate Justice Caguioa declines nomination for Chief Justice

Associate Justices Perlas-Bernabe, Peralta accept nomination; Reyes files application

(Eagle News)–Supreme Court Associate Justice Alfredo Benjamin Caguioa has declined the en banc’s nomination of him to the post of Chief Justice, bringing to three the senior justices who have so far refused to be considered to the top magistrate post.

Apart from Caguioa, of the five most senior justices who are automatically nominated to the post of Chief Justice, two others have already declined their nominations: Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio and Associate Justice Marvic Leonen.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra, who is also an ex-officio member of the Judicial and Bar Council, said the remaining two senior justices, Estela Perlas-Bernabe and Diosdado Peralta, accepted their nomination.

Guevarra said Justice Andres Reyes Jr. has, for his part, applied for the top magistrate post.

The deadline for the applications for the Chief Justice post is 4:30 p.m. today.
