Roque: De Lima detained over “serious drug charges,” not over principles, political beliefs

(Eagle News) — Senator Leila de Lima is detained over “serious drug charges.”

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque had this to say following former President Benigno Aquino III’s comment the former justice secretary was in jail because of her principles and political beliefs.

Aquino made the pronouncement during the launch of her electronic book “Dispatches from Crame I,” as he urged the public to continue to support her.

“The lady senator was arrested and incarcerated because of serious drug charges where she was accused of allowing the illegal drug trade to proliferate inside the New Bilibid Prison when she was the DOJ Secretary,” Roque said.

De Lima is facing drug-related complaints in connection with her alleged involvement in the illegal drug trade in the facility in Muntinlupa when she was justice secretary.

She is currently detained in Camp Crame.
