(Eagle News)–President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday, May 27, threatened to resign if his son Paolo runs for the speakership in the House of Representatives.
“Sinabi ko sa kanya, if you run for speakership, let me know. Kasi kung tatakbo ka, magre-resign ako,” Duterte said in a speech during the oathtaking of new government officials in the Palace.
According to Duterte he was not taking sides in the race.
Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez, who already served as Speaker when Duterte won the presidency in 2016 but was ousted, and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez have, however, already talked to him about the same, Duterte said.
Paolo Duterte won as representative of Davao in the recent May 13 polls.
The list of Speaker hopefuls includes Reps. and incoming Reps. Lord Allan Velasco of Marinduque, Martin Romualdez of Leyte, Loren Legarda of Antique, Pantaleon Alvarez of Davao del Norte and Alan Peter Cayetano of Taguig.
