President Duterte designates Briones, Andanar as new members of Unesco nat’l commission

(Eagle News) — Secretaries Leonor Briones and Martin Andanar have been designated as members of the Unesco National Commission of the Philippines.

President Rodrigo Duterte made the designation in  letters sent to the secretaries of the Department of Education and the Presidential Communications Operations Office, respectively.

The letters were dated March 14, 2017.

Duterte said the term of each secretary as member would last for three years.

The 45-member commission attached to the Department of Foreign Affairs is mandated to “advise” the government “on matters relating to Unesco, and (on) appropriate ways and means by which educational, scientific and cultural developments could best benefit the country.”

It also serves as a liaison to the United Nations specialized agency that aims to promote collaboration among countries through educational, scientific and cultural reforms.
