Police: Solano detained alone in MPD cell

(Eagle News) — John Paul Solano spent the night in the Manila Police District headquarters following his surrender to Senator Panfilo Lacson on Friday.

In a press conference on Saturday, Supt. Erwin Margarejo, MPD spokesperson, said Solano, one of three primary suspects in the death of hazing victim Horacio Castillo III, was at present in a detention cell inside the homicide section.

Castillo died of a heart attack due to massive trauma as a result of injuries sustained from hazing rites allegedly performed by the Aegis Juris fraternity over the weekend.

Margarejo said Solano was alone.

According to the police official, Solano has yet to give the police a statement.

In an  interview with reporters after his surrender though, Solano maintained his innocence, noting that his only participation in the entire affair was to give medical assistance to Horacio after the rites.

He said he was a medical technologist by profession.

He admitted to giving false information to the police initially though, and issued an apology for this.

Earlier, Solano  told the police he found Castillo’s body in a street corner in Tondo, Manila.

But Barangay 133 officials disputed his  account, noting that there was no body in the area at the time Solano claimed to have found it.

The barangay officials cited footage from the closed-circuit television camera in the area to boost their argument.

Solano, Margarejo said, will still be inquested for violation of the Anti-Hazing Law and for perjury.
