Police say three people attacked Pasay Councilor Rivera outside Las Piñas mall

Probe possible motives for killing

(Eagle News) — There were more than three people who attacked Pasay Councilor Borbie Rivera, police said on Sunday, as they digged deeper into the motive behind the local official’s killing on a busy Saturday night.

In a radio interview, Senior Supt. Tomas Apolinario, Southern Police District director, said though the type vehicle the suspects used to attack Rivera at SM Southmall in Las Piñas past 8 p.m. was still unclear.

“Mayroong report po na itim na Fortuner pero vineverify pa namin yun kasi usually riding-in-tandem (ang gumagawa nito),” he said.

He said based on their movements, the suspects appeared to be professionals.

According to Apolinario, police were also able to secure around 20 empty shells right outside Door 4 of the mall on Alabang-Zapote road where the attack took place.

He said there were many closed-circuit television cameras in the area.

“Hopefully, mayroong makuha sa CCTV,” he said.

Asked what angle they were looking into, Apolinario said they were checking if the killing was business-related.

Apolinario said they were also checking if the councilor was linked to the illicit drug trade.

This is the second attempt on Rivera’s life.

In June, Rivera and his bodyguard survived an ambush on Macapagal Ave. in Pasay.

In 2014, alleged contract killer Alvin Nidua tagged Rivera as being involved in the murder of race car driver Enzo Pastor.

In his sworn statement, Nidua said it was  Rivera and a police officer who contacted him and asked him to kill the race car driver.

He said, however, that he refused to do the job because of the pay.

Rivera was also arrested a year after, in 2015, for his alleged involvement in a shooting incident that left one man dead and several others hurt in Barangay Pio del Pilar, Makati.

Rivera was the chair of Pasay’s Barangay 112 at that time.

In April 2016, he was released from jail after the court dismissed the case.
