PNP: Politics among angles eyed in Batuan, Masbate vice mayor killing

(Eagle News)–Police on Thursday, Oct. 10, said they were looking at politics as one of possible angles in the killing of Batuan, Masbate Vice Mayor Charlie Yuson III.

In an interview over radio dzmm, Capt. Henry Navarro, chief of the Manila Police District’s homicide section, noted five of Yuson’s supporters were killed during the campaign for the May elections,  based on information from Yuson’s family.

He said Yuson’s son, Charmax Jan Yuson, was declared winner of the mayoralty race, beating  Marco Martin Cam, the son of Philippine Charity Sweepstakes board member Sandra Cam.

Sandra Cam has vehemently denied her family had anything to do with the killing.

“We have yet to receive the actual and sworn statement [ng mga witness] para po maging konkreto ang bagay na iyan,” Navarro said.

According to Navarro, they were also coordinating with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency to see if the vice mayor was included in any drug list.

Arrests

So far, he said four have been arrested with the help of residents who reported the crime immediately.

He said six witnesses saw one of the suspects get off but that his facial features could not be determined since his face was covered by a mask.

Yuson’s two companions who were hurt in the incident are now stable, Navarro said.

The ambush took place as Yuson and his two companions were having breakfast in Sampaloc, Manila on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

In February, police raided the  house and resort of the Yusons in Barangay Canvañez in Masbate, and confiscated high-powered firearms.

The police had said they raided the places following reports the father-and-son tandem was maintaining a private army.

The vice mayor reportedly had a standing warrant of arrest for illegal possession of firearms in connection with the discovery in February when he was killed.
