PNP on majority of Filipinos’ belief some cops engaged in illegal drug trade, EJKs: “Internal cleansing” ongoing

(Eagle News) –The Philippine National Police on Thursday, Feb. 28, said the “internal cleansing” of its ranks was ongoing.

PNP spokesperson Senior Supt. Bernard Banac issued the statement in a radio interview after a Social Weather Stations survey found majority of Filipinos believe some policemen themselves were behind the illegal drug trade and behind extrajudicial killings.

“Patuloy ang ating internal cleansing, yung ating kampanya dito, lahat ng mga pulis na may pagkakamali, pagkakasala at paglabas sa batas ay ating kinakasuhan at sinisibak sa serbisyo,” Banac said.

According to Banac, while there were indeed unscrupulous policemen, he said these constitute only a “very small percent” of the entire police force.

He said PNP Chief Oscar Albayalde was “very strict” in his desire to rid the police force of scalawags.

Based on the December 2018 Social Weather Stations survey, 68 percent of Filipinos believe some policemen were probably or definitely involved in the illegal drug trade.

The survey said 66 percent also believe some policemen were definitely or probably engaged in extrajudicial killings.
