PHL condoles with Indonesia following deadly 7.4-magnitude quake, tsunami

(Eagle News)—The Philippines extended its condolences to Indonesia, following the 7.4-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that killed almost 400 people on Friday, Sept. 28.

“We grieve with our Indonesian brothers and sisters and stand hand in hand with them in praying for all of those who lost their lives in this tragedy,” Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter S. Cayetano, who is in New York  attending the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly, said.

According to Cayetano, the country was ready to respond and extend assistance to its Asian neighbor.

Ambassador to Indonesia Leehiong T. Wee said the earthquake and tsunami hit the  Palu and Donggala.

The Indonesian Disaster Mitigation Agency placed the initial death toll at 384 people with more than 500 injured.

At least 29 are still missing.

According to Wee, there was no Filipino casualty.

He said the only Filipino in the area—a detainee serving his sentence at the Lapas Penitentiary—was safe.
