PHIVOLCS hoists lahar advisory over Mayon volcano due to “Tisoy”

(Eagle News) — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has hoisted a lahar advisory for Mayon Volcano in view of the expected landfall of “Tisoy” in the Bicol area.

In its advisory, PHIVOLCS urged residents in “pre-determined zones of lahar hazards in Mayon Volcano” to exercise “vigilance and readiness.”

“Prolonged and heavy rainfall may generate post-eruption lahars on major channels during the Mayon Volcano edifice from thick pyroclastic density current material and ashfall deposited during the January-March 2018 Mayon eruption,” PHIVOLCS said.

PHIVOLCS said the lahars and “sediment-laden streamflows”  may particularly take place in Miisi, Mabinit, Matan-ag, Basud, Masarawag Maninila and Quirangay Channels.

“Communities and local government units beside these drainages are advised to be additionally vigilant and to move residents to high ground when heavy rains occur,” PHIVOLCS said.

It said an Alert Level 2 remains hoisted over the volcano.
