Philippines hopes for peaceful resolution of political turmoil in Thailand

MANILA, Philippines — (ENS) The Department of Foreign Affairs hopes for a peaceful resolution in the political turmoil in Thailand, while also imposing a temporary travel ban on migrant workers traveling to Thailand.

In a statement, the DFA said it noted the “latest developments in Thailand” where there are between 10,000 to 15,000 working Filipinos.

“In line with previous statements of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers, the Philippines supports a peaceful resolution of the present situation. The Philippines likewise hopes for an early return to normalcy consistent with democratic principles, the rule of law and the will and interest of the Thai people,” the DFA statement said.

On May 20, shortly after the declaration of martial law in Thailand, the DFA issued alert level 2 for Filipinos residing in Thailand.

Alert Level 2 is issued when there are real threats to the life, security, and property of Filipinos arising from internal disturbance in or external threat to the host country. Under Alert Level 2, Filipinos in Thailand are instructed to restrict non-essential movements, avoid public places and prepare for evacuation if necessary.

Under Alert Level 2, the Department of Labor and Employment allows only overseas Filipino workers with existing contracts (balik-manggagawa) to return to their host country. (Eagle News Service)
