Palace welcomes UP plan to teach language, lit, culture under martial law to students

(Eagle News)–The Palace on Monday, Sept. 17, welcomed the University of the Philippines’ plan to teach the language, literature and culture under martial law to students.

“Every student should know and learn any subject that concerns governance,” Panelo said.

Martial law was declared by then-Presidents Ferdinand Marcos, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and now-President Rodrigo Duterte.

Marcos had declared martial law to arrest what he said was the Communist threat following a series of bombings, while Arroyo did so over Maguindanao following the murder of 58 people, many of them journalists, allegedly by the Ampatuan clan.

Duterte declared martial law in Mindanao in 2017 after Maute terrorists overran Marawi in a supposed bid to establish an Islamic caliphate in Southeast Asia.

Martial law there has since been extended, and is slated to lapse on December 31 this year.
