Palace on Duterte threat to fire Robredo if state secrets are revealed: He was merely reminding her of the limits to her appointment

(Eagle News)–President Rodrigo Duterte was merely reminding Vice President Leni Robredo of the limits to her appointment when he said he would fire her if she revealed state’s secrets, the Palace said.

In a statement, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said, after all, that it “is his constitutional duty not only to enforce all the laws but to ensure that all his alter egos, including a co-chairperson of the Inter-Agency Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs, are performing their respective functions within the scope and ambit of the law.”

“Revealing state secrets to foreign individuals and entities as well as welcoming those who have trampled the country’s sovereignty would be damaging to the welfare of the Filipino people,” he said, dismissing speculations Robredo was being set up to fail as drug czar.

“Not to mention that under Article 229 of the Revised Penal Code, such revelation of privileged information is a crime which has perpetual special disqualification from office, among its penalties,” he added.

Earlier, Robredo asked for documents containing classified information, and later met with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes, among others, to discuss the drug war.
