Palace: Duterte to cut short Japan trip due to “unbearable pain in spinal column near pelvic bone” following motorcycle accident

(Eagle News)–President Rodrigo Duterte will cut short his trip to Japan due to “unbearable pain in his spinal column near the pelvic bone,” the Palace said on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said this was due to Duterte’s fall during a motorcycle ride in the Presidential Security Group compound on Thursday, October 17.

“Duterte sumemplang kagabi habang nagmomotor,” Senator Bong Go had said.

He said the President had a sore hip, but Panelo said there was nothing to worry about.

According to Panelo, the President will return to the country early evening today, October 22, and will see his neurologist tomorrow, October 23, for consultation.

“The Chief Executive will thus have to miss the Emperor’s banquet this evening at the Imperial Palace and has requested Mayor Sara Duterte to represent him and attend on his behalf,” Panelo said.

Panelo said the President, however, attended the enthronement rites of Emperor Naruhito earlier today, and used  a cane to assist him while walking.

“While this was unforseeable, the public can rest assured that there is nothing to worry as regards the physical health and condition of the President as he gives serious priority thereto in actively serving our country,” Panelo said.

Duterte’s trip to Japan was supposed to have ended on Oct. 24. With a report from Vic Somintac
