One inmate dies, ten others are injured in Antipolo City Jail fire

Another inmate escapes amid commotion on Thursday night, the BJMP says

(Eagle News)–An 84-year-old detainee was killed and ten others were injured after a fire broke out in the Antipolo City Jail on Thursday night.

The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology did not identify the 84-year-old, who was facing rape charges, but said he had complained of difficulty of breathing  and was later declared dead on arrival in the hospital.

The BJMP said ten other detainees were injured in a stampede that was caused by the fire, which broke out at 8 p.m.

They are undergoing treatment in a nearby hospital.

According to the BJMP,  another detainee,  Michael Zimon Dig, who was facing two counts of robbery, managed to escape from the jail.

Tracker teams have been deployed for his immediate capture.

The fire was declared out at 9 p.m., the BJMP said.
