“Ompong” weakens as it moves off the coast of Laoag, Ilocos Norte

(Eagle News)—Typhoon “Ompong” continues to weaken and is now off the coast of Laoag in Ilocos Norte, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said.

In its 11 a.m. advisory, PAGASA said as of 10 a.m., the eye of Typhoon “Ompong” was located 30 kilometers west of Laoag.

“Ompong” is packing maximum sustained winds of 170 kilometers per hour near the center, and gustiness of up to 260 kilometers per hour, as it moves westward at 25 kilometers per hour.

Signal No. 3 is up over Cagayan including the Babuyan Group of Islands, Batanes, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, La Union, Mountain Province, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Apayao and Abra.

As in the areas under Signal No. 3, PAGASA said the areas under Signal No. 2–Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Pangasinan, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Aurora, Zambales, Quirino, Pampanga and Bulacan–will experience stormy weather.

Signal No. 1 is up over Bataan, Rizal, Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, Lubang and northern Quezon including Polillo Island.

PAGASA said the southwest monsoon enhanced by the typhoon will bring gusty winds with occasional moderate to heavy rains over western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao,  Mimaropa and Bicol, and scattered light to moderate to at times heavy rains over eastern and central Visayas.

“Residents in these areas, especially those living near river channels, in low-lying areas and in mountainous areas, are advised to take appropriate actions against possible flooding and landslides, coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices, and to continue monitoring for updates,” PAGASA said.

Fisherfolk and seacraft are also advised not to venture out of the seaboards under a tropical cyclone signal warning, and the seaboards of Luzon and of Visayas and the northern and western seaboards of Mindanao.
