“Ompong” maintains strength; 12 areas still under Signal No. 3

(Eagle News)—-Typhoon “Ompong” maintained its strength on Saturday afternoon as it moved in a west northwestward direction.

As of 1 p.m., the eye of the typhoon was located 85 kilometers west of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.

“Ompong” is packing maximum sustained winds of 170 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 260 kilometers per hour as it moved west northwest at 25 kilometers per hour.

Signal No. 3 is up over Cagayan including Babuyan Group of Islands, Batanes, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, La Union, Mountain Province, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Apayao and Abra.

Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, Pangasinan, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Aurora, Zambales, Quirino, Pampanga and Bulacan are under Signal No. 2, which means, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said, they would experience stormy weather as in the areas under Signal No. 3.

Signal No. 1 is also up over Bataan, Metro Manila, Rizal, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, Lubang Island and Northern Quezon including Polillo Island.

The southwest monsoon enhanced by the typhoon will bring gusty winds with occasional moderate to heavy rains over Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Mimaropa and Bicol Region, while scattered light to moderate to at times heavy rains will be experienced over eastern and central Visayas.

“Fisherfolk and those with small seacrafts are advised not to venture out over the seaboards of areas with TCWS and the  seaboards of Luzon and Visayas and the northern and western seaboards of Mindanao,” PAGASA said.
