The newly appointed Philippine National Police spokesperson admitted on Wednesday said fake news now poses a “big challenge.”

In a speech after assuming the helm of the national police force’s Public Information Office, Chief Supt. John Bulalacao said because of the advent of new technologies, people “can easily take pictures and send it to almost everybody.”

“So kapag may mga ganitong situations, the chief PIO should be capable enough to address possible issues that may arise dito sa mga situations na ito,” he said.

He said the PNP PIO should also “be able to help the public in distinguishing truth from propaganda, facts from fake news, objectivity and impartiality from sensationalism.”

He said he would do this by releasing accurate information about the PNP in both mainstream and alternative media.

He said his office would also be “transparent” in doing this.

“Yun ang gusto ko lang ipaabot sa inyo ngayong umaga,” he said.

Bulalacao replaced Chief Supt. Dionardo Carlos, who was appointed chief of the PNP’s Aviation Security Group.

Carlos replaced Chief Supt. Sheldon Jacaban, who retired from the service.
