Luzon, Visayas grids placed under red, yellow alerts

(Eagle News)–The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines placed the Luzon and Visayas grids under red and yellow alerts on Tuesday, April 16.

According to the NGCP, the red alert was up over Luzon’s grid from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

A yellow alert was hoisted from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.

The same yellow alert was in place over the Visayas grid from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

A red alert is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.

Meanwhile, a yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.

According to the NGCP, in Luzon, 19 power plants were on forced outage, while three others were running on “derated capacities, for a total of 2117.3 MW unavailable to the grid.”

In the Visayas, meanwhile, 12 power plants were on forced outage while five others were running on derated capacities, making for
“a total of 676.5 MW unavailable to the grid.”

The NGCP said the peak demand in Luzon was 13,024 MW and the available capacity 13,537 MW.

In the Visayas, peak demand was at 2,440 MW while the available capacity was pegged at 2,742 MW.
