LP to form “resistance” coalition in time for 2019 polls

(Eagle News) — The Liberal Party is eyeing to form a coalition that would reportedly “vigorously resist the slide to authoritarian and anti-democratic rule” in time for the 2019 polls.

In a statement, LP President Senator Francis Pangilinan said they hope to “help build together the broadest coalition of groups and individuals united behind defending our freedoms and our civil and political rights.”

He said for this, “we will need to work with other groups and forces willing to unite and to resist extra-judicial killings and human rights abuses, the undermining of our sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea, and the continuing rise of prices of basic commodities, among others.”

“Resistance is our movement,” he said.

Pangilinan made the announcement following Senator Bam Aquino’s statement he would not be joining the PDP-Laban’s senatorial slate.

With his announcement, Aquino would be the only re-electionist senator who has no plans of  joining the ruling political party’s senatorial ticket.

In a radio interview over the weekend, PDP-Laban’s Senate President Koko Pimentel said the party’s possible senatorial bets include Senators Sonny Angara, Nancy Binay, JV Ejercito, Grace Poe and Cynthia Villar.

He added, however, that the final senatorial slate would be decided by President Rodrigo Duterte.
