Lorenzana recommends no martial law extension in Mindanao

(Eagle News)–Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana on Wednesday, Dec. 4, said he has recommended no further extension of martial law in Mindanao to President Rodrigo Duterte.

Lorenzana said the recommendation was based on the assessment of the military and the police.

Mindanao was placed under martial law in May 2017, after Maute terrorists overran Marawi in a supposed bid to establish an Islamic caliphate in Southeast Asia.

Martial law in the island group was extended three times upon the request of Duterte himself, with the latest slated to lapse on Dec. 31.
