Leonen declines nomination for Chief Justice

(Eagle News)–Supreme Court Associate Justice Marvic Leonen has declined the SC en banc’s nomination of him for the Chief Justice post.

SC public information office chief Brian Hosaka said this was according to Leonen himself, in a statement sent to him after the en banc agreed to nominate the five most senior justices for the post to be left vacant by Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin when he retires on Oct. 17.

In the statement, Leonen declined to give reasons for refusing the nomination, saying there was no requirement for him to  do this.

“For now, in my considered judgement, my decision is the right thing to do for myself, this Court and this country. I will be able to do what I do best for our people in my current position at this time,” he said.

“As always, I am committed to giving my support to whoever is constitutionally appointed as the next Chief Justice,” he added.
