Lapid on proposal to hike ATM transaction fees: Let’s not give workers that additional burden

(Eagle News)–Senator Lito Lapid on Thursday, Aug. 15, urged the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to consider the effect of increased automated teller machine fees on workers when studying the applications for the same of some banks.

“Wag na sana nating dagdagan pa ang pasanin ng ating mga kababayan, lalo na ng mga manggagawa na kakarampot na nga ang kinikita ay mababawasan pa,” Lapid said in a brief statement.

According to Lapid, increasing ATM transaction fees will also discourage Filipinos from keeping their money in the banks.

“Paano pa natin mahihikayat ang mas maraming Pilipino na maglagak ng kanilang pera sa bangko kung patuloy nating tataasan ang bayad sa simpleng pagwi-withdraw ng kanilang pera sa bangko?” he asked.

The BSP said less than ten banks applied for the higher ATM transaction fees.

It said it would take the BSP  20 days  to complete an evaluation of all the applications.

At present, banks charge from a low of P11 to a high of P15 for ATM withdrawals, the BSP said.
