(Eagle News) — The University of the Philippines’ Shopping Center caught fire on Thursday.

Pictures online showed flames engulfing the structure inside the UP Diliman campus.

A second alarm has been hoisted as of past 7 a.m.

It was downgraded to a first alarm at 8:38 a.m., the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said in its tweet.

UP Vice President for Public Affairs Jose Dalisay Jr. said in a tweet that the fire was “very bad,” as it spread “throughout the main building itself.”

“Very thick smoke. Am afraid the place is basically lost. It had been newly renovated,” Dalisay said.

He noted, however, that the Philippine National Bank and the LandBank nearby were so far safe.

Firemen have already put out the fire.
