Senator Francis Pangilinan has resigned as president of the Liberal Party.

Pangilinan’s resignation came after the loss of all Otso Diretso Senate bets in the May 13 elections.

As of May 21, the highest-ranking Otso Diretso senatorial candidate was Bam Aquino, in fourteenth place, still outside the winning circle.

Apart from Aquino, Otso Diretso fielded as Senate bets former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, Erin Tañada, lawyer Romulo Macalintal, Chel Diokno, Pilo Hilbay, Samira Gutoc and Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano.

“As campaign manager for the Otso Diretso slate, I was unable to ensure our victory in the elections and I therefore assume full responsibility for the outcome and hold myself primarily accountable for this defeat..,” Pangilinan said.

Pangilinan’s resignation is effective June 30.

He has handed his resignation letter to Vice President Leni Robredo, LP chair.
