JUST IN: Former Manila jail warden appointed new BuCor director-general

(Eagle News)–The Bureau of Corrections has a new director-general.

President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Gerald Bantag to the post left vacant by Nicanor Faeldon, who was sacked by the chief executive over the Good Conduct Time Allowance law mess.

The Palace said Bantag, a former Manila jail warden, was appointed “based on his professional competence and honesty.”

“The Palace is behind the President’s decision and is confident that DG Bantag will continue the Administration’s campaign against corruption as he spearheads reform initiatives in the Bureau,” the Palace said.

During his stint as Manila jail warden, Bantag  called for the segregation of drug offenders, a move the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology then said would enable them to avail of “proper interventions such as therapy programs, physical fitness programs, counseling, and spiritual enhancement activities.”

Around 200 inmates belonging to Dorms 9 and 10 held a noise barrage in October 2016 to oppose Bantag’s measure and oust him as jail warden.
