(Eagle News)–The Judicial and Bar Council has nominated nine people for the position of SC Associate Justice to President Rodrigo Duterte.
Nominated for the post to be left vacant by Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio when he retires on Oct. 26 were Court of Appeals Associate Justices Manuel Mejorada Barrios, Edgardo Lao delos Santos, Japar Babay Dimaampao, Ramon del Rosario Garcia, Jhosep Ylarde Lopez, Pablito Alhambra Perez, Ricardo de Rivera Rosario, and Maria Filomena Dumandan Singh; and SC administrator Jose Midas Marquez.
The President has 90 days from October 26 to appoint Carpio’s replacement, based on the Constitution.
The JBC, however, deferred taking action on the nominations for the Chief Justice post to October 15, three days before Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin is slated to retire.
Four justices—Supreme Court Associate Justices Diosdado Peralta, Estela Perlas-Bernabe, Jose Reyes Jr. and Andres Reyes Jr.— have accepted their automatic and outside nominations. With reports from Moira Encina
