Ilocos Sur RTC judge killed in La Union ambush; SC condemns slay

(Eagle News)–A Regional Trial Court judge of Ilocos Sur was killed in an ambush in San Fernando City, La Union on Tuesday, Nov. 5.

A police report sent to Court Administrator Midas Marquez said Ilocos RTC Branch 25 Judge Mario Anacleto Bañez was on board his vehicle, with plate number ACL 1508, on his way home when he was shot by several unidentified men at 5:40 p.m. in Barangay Mameltac.

The men allegedly fled the scene on board a blue motorcycle.

Bañez was rushed to the nearby Bethany hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

In a statement, Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta strongly condemned the killing and called on the law enforcement authorities to “exert their best efforts and be relentless in their investigation for the immediate apprehension of those responsible for this dastardly and atrocious act.”

He also expressed his sympathies for the kin of the victim.
