Guevarra: With good conduct law now applied retroactively, Antonio Sanchez, over 10000 other inmates may be freed soon

(Eagle News)–Former Calauan, Laguna Mayor Antonio Sanchez, who was convicted of the rape and murder of two University of the Philippines Los Baños students, may be released soon following deductions from his prison time for good conduct.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said apart from Sanchez, around 10,000 more inmates may benefit from Republic Act 10592 or the law that increased the Good Conduct Time Allowance for inmates.

Guevarra said the Supreme Court  in June also  ruled that the law, which was initially applied prospectively, should be applied retroactively to cover inmates who were convicted prior to its  enactment in 2013.

The Pasig Regional Trial Court convicted Sanchez of the rape and murder of Sarmenta’s death and of murder for the killing of Eileen Sarmenta and her friend, Allan Gomez, in 1995.
